Common questions regarding the Belize DIY (Do It Yourself) fishing packages.

Q. What fish can you catch from shore?

A. Mostly bonefish. We have mass schools of bonefish that feed in the turtle grass on our shores. In fact, walking either north or south along the beach with wading shoes will provide ample opportunities for casting to bonefish.

Q. Can I catch Permit?

A. There are a couple of select flats areas that are accessible from the shoreline. These areas are on the northern end of the island and will require you rent a Bicycle or Walk (Walking will take 2hr each way). The specific flats areas are known to hold permit that you can wade to and catch. It has been done but it's not as always guaranteed like the Bonefish.

Q. Any chance of Tarpon?

A. No! You may see a couple cruise by if you're out on the end of a boat dock, But they'll be motoring towards the feeding grounds and want nothing to do with you. And they'll probably be outside of your casting range anyways. Even if you did manage to hook one, he'd have you wrapped around a dock piling so fast your head would spin. And there goes your $70.00 Fly Line, $10.00 Bahama twist Leader, and $5.00 fly.

Q. Can you fish from the beach?

A. Belize has a law called "Queen's Land" meaning, the first thirty feet of shoreline from the waters edge is owned by the Queen and is for public access. No one can say you're fishing on private property.

Q. Can I fish from boat docks?

A. Again, Belize law stipulates a Boat dock is of public use from six am (6:00 am) until six pm (6:00 pm). Boats may dock on any pier during these hours on the "windward side" (the side the wind is blowing into the dock - 99% of the time, on Ambergris caye that will be the north side of the dock/pier). Same applies to walking and fishing, you can legally use the dock from 6 am to 6 pm.

The TRUTH about Wading the fishing flats of Belize

Many fishing operators will tell you that it's impossible to fish from the beaches in Belize and that you must have a boat to go fishing in Belize. This simply is NOT TRUE (remember they want your $300 PER DAY boat fee). There are several limestone bottom flats that can be waded for bonefish and the occasional permit. You simply need someone with experience to point you in the right direction. This style of fly fishing is an excellent way to get a little exercise and a fun way to go fishing in Belize.

You will need the following items for a guided wade fishing trip in Belize: A comfortable pair of wading shoes (I recommend high-top shoes to keep small gravel and debris out of your shoes), A long sleeve light weight shirt (I recommend Columbia Bonehead or Bahamas shirts), A flats fishing hat with a protective sun cape, shorts that go below the knee or light weigh "quick drying" pants, sun screen 50 spf or higher, a fly rod & reel or spinning rod & reel. Some flies (visit our Belize Fly patterns section for recommended Belize bonefish patterns, Belize permit patterns, and Belize tarpon patterns), a good cast, and a willingness to have a great time fishing in Belize.

What to expect with a Guided fishing trip in Belize

Just as many other guided fishing trips on foreign waters. These trips feature day long excursions with one of our Belize flats fishing specialists. Due to the nature of these trips that rely on the time of your captain as well as his years of experience stalking fish in Belize to provide a fisherman or fisher woman a better chance of catching their targeted species. These trips are more costly. However, at Bite Me Belize fishing adventures we proudly offer the most affordable pricing for a day of guided fishing in Belize.

Be it Tarpon, Permit, or the elusive Bonefish our professional guides will put you on tons of opportunities to cast to and catch these prized games fish on fly rod or spinning gear. A guided day of fishing in Belize will cost a flat fee of $275.00 US (compare to the average cost of $300 to $350 per day) for one person. Two fishermen or fisherwomen are allowed to fish from the same boat, the cost for two is $300.00 per day. If you have a group of three of four (or more) let us know we can accommodate any size group.

Fly Fishing in Belize | Techniques & Tips 4 Success

If you're a novice or "newbie" to saltwater fly fishing there are a few things you'll want to know about prior to booking your Belize fly fishing adventure.

[1]. The Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon and just about all flats species are very wary fish. They spook easily and are often extremely alert to sounds, unfamiliar shadows or shapes in the water. Most of you casts will be between the 70 to 80 foot range and your accuracy must be EXCELLENT. You need to be able to put your fly in a coffee cup at 80 feet. Practicing your casting prior to your Belize fishing trip will greatly increase your ability to catch fish and your level of enjoyment on your trip.

[2.] Tropical trade winds - That's right, there is almost always a tropical breeze here in the island off the coast of Belize. A typical day of Belize fishing will have you casting in steady 9 to 12 mph breezes. Learning a low casting method for fly fishing will bring you an even greater advantage such as the Belgium Cast. Another fly casting technique you'll want to be familiar with is the "Double Haul" cast. Knowing how to use the "Double Haul" will aid you significantly in delivering your fly on long distance casts here on the Belize fishing grounds.

Belize Fishing Information

The fly fishing in Belize is world class. Belize has long been known for it's amazing permit fishing. However, many are unaware of the vast number of Bonefish and Tarpon thrive in the waters of Belize. The fishing in Belize is great year round, but it really starts to heat up during the summer months due to the spawning of the Permit and the Bonefish. Also from July through early September the Belize Tarpon fishing gets rather crazy as the big migrating Tarpon in the 125 - 150 lb range begin cruising through. From late May through the end of September you'll find tons of super active and aggressive flats fishing.

Not to say that it ends after September, because the fishing here is still GREAT YEAR ROUND! During the remaining months of the year you'll tap into an average size Bonefish from 3 - 5 lbs, Tarpon ranging from 15 - 40 lbs, with Permit in the 7 - 10 lb range. If you're wanting to know more specifics about fishing in Belize there are a few websites that address in greater specifics the details to fly fishing in Belize. These sites discuss types of gear to bring, what is recommended in terms of gear, types of saltwater fly patterns that are most productive for the Belize Permit, Belize Bonefish, and Belize Tarpon. One site even features step-by-step videos showing you how to tie your own Belize saltwater flies.
